For many centuries, Belfast was a small settlement. Everything changed in 1613, when a Royal charter gave Belfast town status. It expanded rapidly, becoming an important port and manufacturing centre.

By the end of the 19th century, Belfast had outgrown its status as a town and was a major industrial powerhouse, known for its engineering, shipbuilding, ropemaking, tobacco and textile industries.

Belfast continued to grow rapidly in the 19th century. Belfast was made a borough in 1842 and it was made a city in 1888.

By 1901 Belfast had a population of 349,000. By 1939 it had risen to 438,000 and today’s population is 305,000.
Belfast is now a thriving city it is home to a selection of historic buildings, museums, and interesting sightseeing opportunities and is also the birthplace of the Titanic.
Belfast's industrial heritage has shaped a city steeped in culture, shown at its best at the Ulster Museum and the City Hall.
